Hilbert Museum presents:
AAA Westways Magazine Panel: “Visionary Architect of the Southwest: On The Mary Colter Trail”
Thursday, June 11, 2026 | 6:00 p.m.
Two good friends went on a unique trip from California to Arizona and New Mexico, in search of the buildings, interiors and legacy created by famed designer Mary Colter (1869-1958). The result is the current cover story in the summer issue of Westways Magazine.
Join us at the Hilbert Museum for an expert panel discussing Colter’s innovative designs of landmark spaces for the Fred Harvey Company’s “Harvey House” inns and lodging/tourist spaces for the Santa Fe Railroad, notably in Grand Canyon National Park (the Hopi House, Hermit’s Rest, Desert View Watchtower and Bright Angel complex, among others). Her influential work drew together motifs from the Spanish Colonial Revival and Mission Revival styles, along with Native American, Rustic and Southwestern influences. Colter was a pioneering woman in an almost exclusively male-dominated space.
Panel members: Trisha Cole, contributing writer; Derrik J. Lang, Westways senior features editor; Annalee Andres, art historian and lecturer; and Mark Hilbert, founder of the Hilbert Museum and longtime Mary Colter enthusiast. The approximately 45-minute presentation will be followed by a 15-minute audience Q&A.
